Wisdom teeth are the last molars at the back of the mouth, usually coming through between ages 17 and 25. Often there isn’t enough room, so they grow at an angle or stay partly under the gum – this is called an impacted wisdom tooth. Patients visit our dental clinic in Krishna Nagar for careful assessment and removal.
Not every wisdom tooth needs removing. If it is healthy and easy to clean, it can stay. Removal is advised when it causes pain, infection, decay or damage to the tooth in front.
Wisdom tooth problems often flare up suddenly. For severe pain, swelling or difficulty opening your mouth, contact our emergency dentist the same day.
A dull or throbbing ache behind your last molar, sometimes spreading to the ear or jaw, is a common sign of a problem wisdom tooth.
The gum over a partly erupted wisdom tooth can trap food and become infected (pericoronitis), causing swelling, pain and a bad taste.
Swelling around an infected wisdom tooth can make it painful or hard to open your mouth fully. This needs prompt care.
If the gum around a wisdom tooth keeps getting infected, removing the tooth is usually the best long-term solution.
Wisdom teeth are hard to clean, so they often decay – and can damage the molar in front of them too.
An impacted wisdom tooth pushing against other teeth can cause pressure, discomfort and sometimes crowding.
Most wisdom teeth are removed in 30 to 60 minutes under local anaesthetic.
Dr Mani checks the position of the tooth and its roots, and the nearby nerve.
Local anaesthetic numbs the area completely.
For impacted teeth, a small opening is made in the gum.
The tooth is removed, sometimes in sections for gentler removal.
Dissolvable stitches may be placed and you receive aftercare advice.
