Aesthetic Dentistry Explained

What cosmetic dentistry covers

Cosmetic dentistry is the part of dental treatment concerned with how teeth look rather than only how they function. It covers the colour, shape, length, surface and position of the teeth, and includes veneers, teeth whitening, tooth coloured fillings, cosmetic crowns, tooth reshaping and gum contouring.

Many of these treatments are quick. A chipped corner can be rebuilt in a single appointment, and stained teeth often need nothing more than professional whitening. Others, such as veneers across the front teeth, are planned over a few visits. A cosmetic dentist should tell you which category your case falls into before suggesting anything permanent.

01

Health before appearance

Decay, gum problems and a heavy bite are treated first, or cosmetic work will not last.

02

The least invasive option first

Whitening and bonding are considered before veneers, and veneers before crowns.

03

Matched to your face

Shade and shape are chosen to suit you, not set to the brightest available white.

Cosmetic Dental Treatments

Cosmetic dentistry treatments we offer

Each of these corrects a different problem. Most patients need one or two of them rather than the whole list.

01

Professional whitening for teeth stained by tea, coffee, tobacco or age, done without altering the tooth surface.

02

Dental veneers

Thin ceramic shells are bonded to the front of the teeth to correct colour, chips, minor twists and small gaps.

03

Tooth coloured fillings

Composite fillings matched to your tooth shade, used to repair decay and rebuild chipped or worn edges.

04

Cosmetic crowns

Metal free ceramic crowns for teeth too damaged for a filling or veneer, shaped and shaded to match the rest.

05

Tooth reshaping

Small amounts of enamel smoothed to even out a pointed, jagged or overlong tooth edge, usually in one visit.

06

Several of these treatments planned together when the whole front of the smile is being corrected at once.

Is Cosmetic Treatment for You?
Teeth problems we correct with cosmetic treatment

Most patients arrive pointing at one tooth. The examination shows whether that tooth alone can be treated or whether the ones beside it need including for the result to match.

No-pressure consultation
We tell you what can be improved, what is best left alone, and which option removes the least natural tooth to get there.

How We Approach Cosmetic Work

What decides whether cosmetic work lasts

Two sets of veneers made from the same material can behave very differently over ten years. What separates them is usually decided before any work starts.

01

The teeth must be healthy first

Cosmetic work bonded onto a decayed tooth or an inflamed gum line fails early. Fillings, cleaning and gum treatment are completed before any veneer or crown is planned.

02

Enamel is not replaceable

Every millimetre of tooth removed is gone permanently, so the conservative option is offered first. Bonding and whitening leave the tooth intact, veneers need a little preparation, crowns need the most.

03

The bite decides the lifespan

Grinding and an uneven bite break cosmetic work faster than any material weakness. The bite is checked and adjusted, and a night guard is advised where grinding is evident.

Cosmetic Treatment Process

How cosmetic treatment is carried out, step by step

The number of appointments depends on the treatment, but the sequence stays the same in every case.

1

Examination and discussion

Teeth, gums and bite are examined and you point out exactly what you want changed.

2

Health treatment first

Any decay, gum inflammation or loose old filling is dealt with so the cosmetic work has a sound base.

3

Choosing the treatment

The options are explained in terms of how much natural tooth each one removes, how long it takes and how long it should last.

4

Carrying out the work

Whitening, bonding and reshaping are completed in the chair. Veneers and crowns are prepared, then fitted once the laboratory work is ready.

5

Bite check & review

The bite is checked and adjusted, care instructions are given, and you return for a review appointment.

How Much Tooth Is Removed

Choosing between a veneer and a crown

The same tooth can often be corrected in more than one way. This is what changes depending on how much of the natural tooth is taken down first. A crown is still the right answer for a badly broken or root canal treated tooth, where there is not enough sound tooth left for anything lighter.

What is a cosmetic dentist?

A cosmetic dentist is a dentist who focuses on the appearance of the teeth alongside their health, using treatments such as veneers, whitening, tooth coloured fillings, crowns and reshaping. The same clinical training applies as for any dental treatment, with additional attention to shade, shape and proportion.
The main ones are teeth whitening, dental veneers, tooth coloured fillings, ceramic crowns, tooth reshaping, gap closure and gum contouring. A smile makeover is several of these carried out to a single plan.
Whitening, reshaping and most bonding involve no cutting and need no anaesthetic. Veneers and crowns require preparation done under local anaesthetic, so the appointment is comfortable, with mild sensitivity for a day or two afterwards.
That depends on shade and proportion rather than on the material. Teeth are matched to your face and to the teeth beside them, and with veneers or crowns you see the shape at the temporary stage before the final ones are made.
Whitening and bonding leave the tooth intact. Veneers need a small amount of enamel removed and crowns need more, which is why the conservative option is always offered first and only ruled out when the tooth is too damaged for it.
Ceramic veneers and crowns commonly last ten years or more. Composite bonding needs touching up sooner. Whitening fades gradually over a year or two and can be repeated. Grinding, biting hard objects and smoking shorten all of them.
Mildly crooked front teeth can be masked with veneers. Where the teeth are properly crowded or the bite is off, braces or aligners correct the position first, and any cosmetic work is done afterwards.
Brush twice daily with a non-abrasive toothpaste, floss around the restorations, cut back on tea, coffee and tobacco, and come for a check and cleaning every six months. Wear a night guard if you grind your teeth.
